Career safety for leaders looks completely different today. The old rulebook said that if you worked hard, delivered results, and stayed loyal, your career would be safe. But layoffs, restructuring, AI, disappearing layers of management, and constant market shifts have made that rulebook obsolete.
In this episode, Blake breaks down how to create real career safety, clarity, and growth no matter what changes around you.
We’re living through one of the most significant transitions in the history of work. Leaders across industries are being blindsided by change, often without support or communication.
Instead of depending on companies to chart the path forward, Blake reveals the five future-proof leadership skills that help you stay grounded, relevant, and adaptable in any environment.
This episode is your roadmap to shift out of survival mode, reclaim your energy, and lead with confidence in a world where certainty no longer exists.
Blake opens with what’s happening inside major organizations like Target, Amazon, Meta, and consulting firms, where layoffs are happening over glitchy video calls and people are learning their job status through automated emails.
What’s disappearing isn’t just job security—it’s the sense of belonging and safety leaders once relied on.
She explains why the traditional definition of career safety no longer works and why relying on your company, your boss, or HR to guide your development is a strategic risk.
Instead, Blake introduces career safety as an internal foundation built on alignment, energy mastery, and adaptability.
In this episode, you’ll learn the Torchlight Framework™—the five skills every leader needs to navigate uncertainty with confidence. These skills help you regulate your energy under pressure, shorten the lows, understand how you’re wired to thrive, and build relationships that open doors even in turbulent times. Blake closes with a powerful call to stop protecting what’s no longer working and start building the version of yourself who can thrive in the world that’s coming.

Real leadership. Real life. Real impact. No more choosing between your career and your life. Here you’ll find honest conversations, science-backed strategies, and inspiring stories to help you thrive at work and truly enjoy your life outside of it.
I’m your host, Blake, and I’m honored to help you create more impact with ease.
Blake (00:05.058)
We were all taught that if you work hard, deliver results, stay loyal, your career will be safe. But that old rule book, it’s obsolete. Today, even the best leaders are getting blindsided by layoffs, burnout, and change they didn’t see coming. The question isn’t how do keep my job anymore? It’s how do I create safety, clarity, and growth no matter what changes around me?
That’s what we’re diving into today. The skill sets that will define the next decade of leadership and how to build real career safety in a world where certainty no longer exists.
Blake (00:51.682)
We’re seeing it everywhere, Target, Amazon, Meta, consulting firms, tech, retail, massive waves of restructuring. And it’s not just layoffs, it’s a reshaping of how organizations operate. I recently caught up with my friend and former client who’s inside Target right now. And what she described is heartbreaking. Layoffs happening over glitchy video calls. People learning they still have a job from an email, not a person.
Entire teams left in isolation, unsure who’s employed and who isn’t. Entire teams left in isolation, working from home, unsure who’s still employed and who isn’t. You know, in 2015, when Target went through something similar, at least we all had a chance to gather. We could process it together, grieve, support one another, and begin to rebuild. This time, that human connection was missing.
And that isolation, it mirrors what’s happening across corporate America. It’s not just that people are losing jobs, it’s the sense of safety and belonging in the workplace that’s been quietly eroding for years.
Blake (02:10.52)
We are living in one of the most significant transitions in the history of work. AI is changing what it means to be productive. Companies are flattening their structure and expecting fewer people to do more. And the speed of change is outpacing how quickly most leaders are learning to adapt.
For years, many professionals have relied on a tops-down model, waiting for the organization, the boss, or HR to guide development or divine success. But that model alone doesn’t work anymore. You can no longer outsource your growth or assume that what made you successful in the past will carry you forward. This is the moment to take back ownership, to build what I call career safety.
Blake (02:59.886)
Career safety isn’t about your company protecting you. It’s about you knowing how to stay relevant, energized, and adaptable no matter what changes are around you. It’s about you knowing how to stay relevant, energized and adaptable, no matter what changes around you. It’s about learning to lead from the inside out, not from fear or overwork, but from alignment.
And here’s what that looks like.
Number one, you understand who you are, how you’re uniquely wired to thrive and your unique fingerprints for success™ which is the natural pattern behind every success you’ve ever had. When you understand this, it takes you from a very limited perspective of how you defined who you are, your skill set, and what you’re capable of to see much more broadly about how your skill sets really can adapt and translate in so many ways.
Blake (04:10.702)
In a world that’s rapidly changing, we need to be able to understand under what conditions do we thrive? How do we create that success and what are the results that we consistently can drive? How do we win?
When you understand how you win and you understand the circumstances that you need to win in, you set yourself up for success no matter what changes come.
Number two, you know how to raise the floor to shorten the depth and duration of your worst moments, minutes, hours, days, weeks. You know how to manage your energy and stay grounded under stress.
And then number three, when you’ve learned how to keep growing, developing and embodying new skills, relationships, and opportunities that align with where the world of work is leading. When you have these foundations, you stop waiting for someone else to define your path. You become adaptable, resilient, and irreplaceable.
Blake (05:24.354)
The real risk is survival mode. Because here’s the truth no one talks about. You can’t future-proof your career from survival mode. When you’re burned out, anxious, or overloaded, your brain literally shuts off the part that handles creativity, problem solving, and learning.
So while everyone feels like they need to upskill in AI or embrace innovation, very few people are talking about the fact that you can’t do that effectively until you first calm your nervous system, restore energy, and create space to learn and be strategic.
That’s why alignment, not balance, is the foundation. When you’re aligned with how you’re wired to work best, stress becomes fuel. When you’re not, it becomes exhaustion. And that’s the invisible line between leaders who adapt and those who burn out.
Let’s get practical. If you wanna create career safety, these are the five skills to master. What I call the Torch Light Framework, because they light the way forward when things feel dark.
Number one, self alignment. Understand your wiring, your Kolbe strengths, your energy rhythms, and your natural pattern for success. Know what fuels versus what drains you. And when you understand that, you can design work around you and your strengths instead of constantly pushing against them.
Number two, energy mastery. Learn how to regulate your nervous system and protect your energy like it’s your most valuable currency, because it is. You cannot make clear decisions from chaos, but in just 10 minutes a day, you can make small shifts that dramatically improve your quality of life, how you feel on a day-to-day basis, and really restore your energy.
Number three, emotional intelligence. Learn how to cultivate inner safety. You can’t control uncertainty, but you can control how you respond to it. You can learn how to embrace uncertainty as possibility instead of as something that you fear.
Blake (07:41.484)
Emotional intelligence is the bridge between stress and strategy, and it truly is the place of opportunity in a world where learning how to embrace opportunity, learning how to adapt is the key to success.
Number four, adaptive learning. Curiosity, it’s the new superpower. You don’t need to know everything. You need to be willing to learn, experiment, and iterate quickly. And what that means is those old patterns or belief systems rooted in perfectionism that have been holding you back, it’s time to let them go and rewire with belief systems and strategies that really enable you to tap into your natural creativity and curiosity.
Because the most future-ready leaders aren’t the ones who know it all. They’re the ones who’ve mastered the art and science of embodying the skills they’re learning. And that doesn’t come from consuming more. It comes from understanding the four levels of learning™ and how to maximize your ability to keep growing and improving yourself based on how you are naturally wired to thrive.
And finally, number five, networked leadership. Relationships are your greatest form of stability. Invest in people, not positions. Opportunities flow through connection, especially when you lead with authenticity and value, and you truly understand who you are, the highest value you bring, and you have confidence in your ability to adapt and win, no matter what comes your way.
Each of these skills creates a layer of safety that no title, company, career path, or paycheck can provide.
There’s a concept from hockey that I love that my old mentor Nic Peterson taught me. You don’t skate to where the puck is, you skate to where it’s going. That’s exactly what’s required now. This moment isn’t about reacting to change, it’s about anticipating it. The leaders who thrive in this new era are the ones developing skills and relationships for the world that’s coming, not clinging to the one that’s fading.
So ask yourself.
Blake (10:05.003)
Where am I playing defense or trying to protect what’s no longer working? And where could I start playing offense, investing in the version of me that’s built for what’s next?
If this conversation resonated with you, if you’re ready to stop chasing safety and start creating it.
Blake (10:29.643)
and you want some support to do so. This is my open invitation to you. A complimentary 30 minute clarity call with me to see if or how we might be able to partner together to help you build not only a sense of career safety, but the confidence, deep self trust and understanding how to continue to grow and navigate change with strength, with clarity and with confidence.
Because the truth is the leaders who thrive in this next decade won’t be the ones who push harder. They’ll be the ones who learn how to optimize their skills, their energy, and their path, and realign faster when things get off track. Learning how to do this can be the most empowering thing that you could do.
Because the truth is, you have far more power to control your circumstances than you believe. And when you create the momentum and you see the benefits week after week, you begin to see just how much truly is possible for you.
Until next time, thanks for joining me.

Until next time, lead with intention and create your impact with ease.
Most successful people don’t realize they’re in burnout because stress and exhaustion have become so normalized. But burnout is actually a sign of deeper misalignment between how you’re wired to thrive and how you’re actually working and living. Fix the misalignment, and everything changes.
