Have you ever caught yourself thinking, Just get to this one thing and I’ll be okay? Maybe it’s a big project at work, a busy season with your team, or even something happening at home. You tell yourself, once this is over, things will calm down and I’ll finally have time to breathe.
That’s what I call the It’ll Be Better When loop. And while it sounds harmless, this pattern is quietly fueling chronic burnout for so many high achievers. Because here’s the truth: it’s not the big moments that are burning you out. It’s the way your daily life is structured.
Most people think burnout happens because of a crisis: a toxic boss, a layoff, a family emergency, a big project at work. And while those things can absolutely add fuel to the fire, they’re rarely the root cause. Burnout is systemic and chronic. It’s the product of daily working and living conditions that don’t leave any room for you to recover.
If your everyday life already has you running on fumes, then the moment something unexpected happens—a high-stakes project, a leadership change, a personal crisis—there’s no room left to absorb it, and so you end up crashing.
Blake Schofield 1:54
Here’s how the Better When loop usually plays out:
- First you push hard, telling yourself it’s only temporary.
- Then you skip recovery, promising yourself that you’ll catch up later.
- You normalize the exhaustion because everyone around you seems to be doing the same thing.
- Then a little extra stressor hits, and suddenly you’re back in overwhelm and burnout.
- You recover just enough to function, but then the loop starts all over again.

Sound familiar?
For most high achievers, it doesn’t look like a full-on collapse. It looks like chronic mild fatigue that you carry even after a full night’s sleep. Foggy thinking. Irritability and snappiness. Feeling disconnected from joy, even though you’re still getting things done and checked off your list. Maybe finding that negativity or cynicism creeping in, and the constant pressure just to keep going—even when your body and mind are begging you to pause.
This isn’t laziness or lack of discipline. It’s your nervous system sending signals that your current life is not sustainable.
Why do so many high achievers in particular fall into this loop? Well, part of it comes down to dopamine. Productivity gives us a chemical reward, and for so many of us, intense output feels good. We love accomplishing things and checking them off our to-do list. We love to see progress. And that feeling is so good that when we’re not performing at that high level, it almost feels like failure or laziness.
Blake Schofield 3:41
That’s why downtime or slower days can feel uncomfortable, and sometimes maybe even guilt-inducing. So we override what our body is telling us. We keep going, focusing on the next goal, and we normalize a way of living that was never meant to be permanent.
Your brain and your body are actually wired for cycles—for deep focus and intentional recovery. And when recovery is missing, the system eventually breaks down.
The good news is: you don’t have to stay stuck here. Breaking the loop doesn’t require completely changing your life or putting your career, family, or responsibilities at risk. It begins with small, tangible, daily shifts.
Here are three practical steps you can try this week:
Blake Schofield 4:31
Number One: Track your energy.
Notice when you naturally have energy and when you don’t. Journal for a week and you’ll begin to see the patterns. One of my favorite hacks: at the end of each day, take 10 minutes to review your digital calendar. Update where you spent your time that day, and then color code it:
- Green = This activity gave you energy. You felt energized and excited, and you had more energy when you finished it than when you began.
- Yellow = Your energy was neutral. It didn’t give you energy, and it didn’t steal any.
- Red = That activity drained your energy. After you were done—or even while you were in it—you started to feel more and more exhausted.
Start doing that, and by the end of the week you’ll clearly see the opportunities in terms of what’s happening on a daily and weekly basis.
Number Two: Build in micro recovery every day.
You don’t need a week-long vacation. Just 5–15 minutes between meetings, or a short walk, can give you breathing room on a daily basis. If you can find two micro-recovery spots in your day and build them in, you’ll be amazed at what that can do for you.
Number Three: Redefine success.
When that moment of It’ll Be Better When comes up, ask yourself: What’s sustainable now? What does success look like if it includes energy, presence, passion, and fulfillment—not just output?
Blake Schofield 6:10
Here’s the deeper truth: these small shifts are important, and they help. But if you find yourself repeating the same burnout cycle again and again, it usually isn’t because you’re not disciplined enough or haven’t found the right hack. It’s because there are deeper hidden beliefs and conditioning at play—things like:
- Feeling like you have to prove your worth through productivity and accomplishments.
- Believing that you can’t ask for help, or that you “should” be able to handle it.
- Equating slowing down with failure or laziness.
Until those root causes are uncovered and addressed, the cycle will keep pulling you back in. Because here’s the truth: tactics and willpower will never override your subconscious mind or your nervous system. They will always win out.
It’s why tactics and tools work for a short while, but then you fall off or start blaming yourself for getting into the same circumstances again. It isn’t your fault. Those patterns will keep returning until you solve the root cause.
Blake Schofield 7:14
That’s the work I do every day with leaders—helping them not just manage burnout, but actually resolve it at the root. So they can create lasting energy, clarity, and fulfillment in both their work and their life without sacrificing what they’ve worked so hard for.
So if you’re listening to this and realizing that you’re caught in this loop, the invitation is this: start with one of these small shifts this week. And when you’re ready to address the deeper patterns holding you back, that’s where coaching can help.
You don’t have to keep doing this alone. You don’t need to wait for life to get easier. You can design a new way of living and leading that supports your energy, your goals, and the life you’re here to lead.
Thanks again for tuning in today. If the conversation resonated with you, please share with a friend or colleague who might be stuck in their own Better When loop.
Until next time, lead with intention and create your Impact with Ease.

Most successful people don’t realize they’re in burnout because stress and exhaustion have become so normalized. But burnout is actually a sign of deeper misalignment between how you’re wired to thrive and how you’re actually working and living.
Fix the misalignment, and everything changes.
