Career burnout isn’t just a bad week at work. It’s a career-long cycle that keeps repeating until you fix the root cause.
In this episode, you’ll recognize the invisible tipping point that pushes high-achievers toward breakdown, and how to break the burnout cycle before it happens again.
One of the most dangerous things about leadership burnout? It builds over years, even decades, creating chronic burnout signs most people miss.
Today, I’m sharing how this career misalignment pattern works, why it’s so hard to see when you’re in it, and the moment that it turns from just a season into the tipping point that leads to breakdown.
I lived this career breakdown cycle three times before I finally recognized I was in it and learned how to stop burnout. Over 16 years in merchandising across four different retailers, the pattern was always the same: six to nine months of energy and excitement, followed by that unsettled pull, less excitement, more drain, more stress, less fulfillment — classic burnout symptoms for high achievers.
If you’ve ever felt the spark fade faster in every new role, or wondered why the same stress and tradeoffs keep returning, this episode is for you.

One of the most dangerous things about burnout is that it’s not always loud. It doesn’t always slam you into the wall that you can see coming. More often, it builds over the years and even decades.
And here’s the part most leaders miss: It’s not just a cycle that you’re going through in your current job. It’s a pattern that repeats throughout your entire career.
Today, I want to share how this pattern works, why it’s so hard to see it when you’re in it, and the moment it turns from just a season into the tipping point that leads to breakdown. I’ll share a bit of my story, because I lived this career breakdown cycle three times before I finally recognized I was in it and I learned how to stop it.
So I made my first big career change and moved into merchandising. And over the next 16 years, I worked in four different retailers, continuing to move up the ladder and become a top performer in every company in every role. The pattern was the same.

The first six to nine months, I was energized and excited. Then I would start to feel that unsettled pull: less excited and more drained, more stress, less fulfillment, and more trade-offs with my life versus my career. Especially after I became a mom, trying to figure out that balance of doing fulfilling work and feeling like I was spending my days doing things that mattered while also trying to be a present, engaged parent was really challenging. And I know so many of you out there likely feel the same or are struggling with the same things.
I used to hope: the next promotion, the next company, when we finally finish this project… then I will finally be happy. Then I’ll finally be able to have the balance that I’m looking for. And often, those changes helped for a little while, but eventually those same feelings returned.
And the reason for that is, I was fixing the symptoms. I was recognizing things that I needed or wanted to change in my career, things I was learning about myself, and I was applying those — not really realizing that they were surface-level fixes. But I wasn’t actually solving the root cause.
It wasn’t until I had my third cycle of burnout, my third breakdown moment, that I finally realized I was stuck in this repeating pattern that I couldn’t outwork or out-strategize.
For a minute, bear with me. I want you to visualize your career as a roller coaster. It starts at the bottom. When you’re energized, excited, and growing, you’re focused on climbing the ladder, learning, and gaining more responsibilities. You’re engaged, optimistic, the future feels wide open.
But then you start questioning the sustainability and the viability. You start noticing the places where you’re having to trade off or compromise your life for your career. You’re doing well, but you’re finding yourself fulfilled less often. Maybe you start to feel stagnant. Stress starts creeping in. You have more responsibility and less joy, and your personal life really starts to feel that strain.
You tell yourself: the next job or the next promotion will fix it.
Blake Schofield 3:31
And then, without realizing it, you hit the tipping point. This is the silent shift where staying the course starts costing you more than it gives back. The financial, personal, and emotional risks are growing — only you’re not aware of it, because the pressure builds slowly. It feels normal. You miss the danger signs.
You try to fix it. Maybe a new boss, a new role, a new schedule. For a little while, you feel less sacrifice, maybe a spark again. But that spark starts fading faster and faster each time: shorter highs and longer lows. Everything starts to feel like more of the same, or a trade-off or compromise.
Before you know it, you’re feeling trapped and exhausted. You’re drained. At the end of the day, work bleeds into your evenings and your weekends. You snap at the people you love. Even rest or vacation doesn’t feel like it brings your energy back.
And then if nothing changes, it is not a matter of if, but when, you will hit your breakdown moment. For some, that’s severe burnout. For others, it’s a performance plan or layoff, even if you’ve been a top performer your entire career. And for others, it shows up as a physical or a mental health crisis.
Here’s the part that’s so important to understand: This cycle repeats in every job. But the longer you continue to lead and live in misalignment, the faster you reach that breakdown moment. The highs get higher, the lows get deeper, and recovery takes longer.
That’s because burnout is chronic misalignment. If you don’t fix the root cause, you’ll keep repeating the pattern across your entire career until you simply cannot do it anymore.
Here’s the good news: You can stop the cycle without risking your income, your reputation, or everything you’ve worked so hard for. You don’t need to blow up your career to feel fulfilled again. You just need a new way to live and lead that honors who you are and how you’re naturally wired to thrive.
For the last eight years, I’ve helped leaders do exactly that — leaders who thought that they had to sacrifice their health, their family, their income, their reputation, or what they’d worked so hard for in order to get the fulfillment out of their career and life that they truly wanted. They discovered how to reignite their energy, reclaim their presence at home, and create a career that truly fuels instead of drains them.
